AAHA credit survey: Most practices OK, but some cause for concern

A NEWStat survey of AAHA practice owners and managers shows that although the general health of the industry remains strong, significant percentages of practices are facing potential financial pitfalls. The survey, conducted in early December, asked a series of questions about how the credit crunch is affecting veterinary practices. One out of three practices said they are not able to fully cover monthly operating expenses with monthly income, and nearly 40 percent said they regularly or occasionally need to negotiate delayed payments to suppliers. Nearly a quarter of practices surveyed said they sometimes need to use personal cash to finance normal operating expenses, and three out of four practices reported having to use business credit cards to cover operating costs.

AAHA yearly conference to support local Tampa charity Hounds 4 Heroes

Each year, the AAHA conference promotes a local charity that strengthens the human-animal bond by helping both animals and people. This year’s charity, Hounds 4 Heroes, is a Tampa Bay charity that provides fully trained service dogs to assist military veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other disabling conditions. AAHA will match up to $5,000 of the money raised for Hounds 4 Heroes at AAHA Tampa 2015.

New pain study ensures that the debate over tramadol will continue

Despite tramadol’s popularity as an oral analgesic in veterinary medicine, experts have debated it’s efficacy for years. And a new study has added fuel to the fire. Researchers at the University of Georgia found that tramadol was ineffective in relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. The researchers compared the use of tramadol with both placebo and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in 35 dogs with osteoarthritis of the elbow or knee in a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Canadian hospital takes second place in AAHAs Practice of the Year award

by Jack Sommars Less than 9 months after being accredited by AAHA,  Bayview Animal Hospital surprised almost everyone,  including itself,  by receiving second place in the association’s 2010 Practice of the Year award. How did the Canadian practice do it? Owner Hilary Mellor, DVM, says the turning point came when she took a mentor’s advice to heart. “I’ve been very fortunate to have a wonderful coach,” she says. “Dr. Jim Stowe, cofounder of Lifelearn, taught me to seek feedback constantly to improve myself and to not take [feedback] personally.
