If you’ve thought about leveraging your veterinary expertise and doing good at the same time, now may be your chance. The National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME) is seeking three board members, whose terms will start in late June 2016, for its Examination Development Advisory Board (EDAB). Nominations are due by May 2. There will be three open positions on the EDAB: one Canine (also Pet Bird), one Feline (also Other Small Animal), and one Equine.

The Collaboration for Veterinary Assessments consisting of the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME) periodically surveys practitioners to ensure that the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE®) reflects the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed by entry-level veterinarians. Given that the last practice analysis was completed in 2009, the NBVME will send a new Practice Analysis survey to a carefully selected sample of veterinarians from all aspects of veterinary medicine throughout the United States and Canada, including potentially AAHA members, in early March.

The AVMA Council on Education (COE) Selection committee is seeking interested and qualified AVMA members who are clinical practitioners to serve on the COE. Veterinary professionals don’t need a study to tell them that pets are good for your health. But now, there is quantitative data to prove it. On Dec. 14, the Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) released a new economic study that quantifies the healthcare cost savings associated with pet ownership. The economic analysis, conducted by researchers at George Mason University, calculated an $11.7 billion savings in U.S. healthcare costs as a result of pet ownership.

On Nov. 23, the Winn Feline Foundation awarded four grants totaling $118,137 to three universities, including the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, the University of California-Davis, and Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

In the wake of the Northern California fires, contained last week, an AAHA-accredited practice is rising from the ashes as one of its heroes. Angels Camp Veterinary Hospital (Angels Camp) boarded over 100 animals for evacuees of the fire, and treated over 30 cats that were either burned or affected by the fire, some with stress-related issue, Alice Sunseri, Practice Manager, told NEWStat.

After many months of review, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has revised its position on domestic cat declawing. The revised declawing position statement was approved at a regularly scheduled AAHA Board of Directors meeting in August 2015. The approval came after months of review and revision by the board appointed Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee.
